Instagram changes its algorithm more often than a tourist changes outfits in Vegas. Annoying? Absolutely. But impossible to keep up with? Not if you know where to look. The truth is, every update leaves clues behind. The brands and creators paying attention aren’t just surviving the changes, they’re using them to their advantage.
While reach, content quality, and audience size still matter, Instagram’s biggest boss recently dropped a reminder that might sting a little for anyone obsessing over views. According to Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s head honcho aka the Chief of the platform, “The thing I think that matters most, and that you really should focus on, is not how much reach your post got. That is an important thing, obviously, but if you want to understand why a post got more or less reach, you should focus on your engagement rates.”
Translation? Views are cute, but engagement pays the bills
For years, creators have been chasing bigger reach numbers, assuming more eyeballs automatically meant more success. But Instagram’s own leadership is pointing toward a different metric—the actions people take after they see your content. Are people cicking that like button? Are they leaving comments or sending it to their friends (which makes a big difference when non-followers do this). The more engagement you are getting on your feed, the more the algorithm is going to push it. This isn’t necessarily new, but those signals tell Instagram that your content is worth showing to more people, across a wider audience, which is how brands can make money if they are keeping up.
And when it comes to engagement, shares might be the heavyweight champion. Shares are going to be what really trigger your platform to say: Hey, ok, people are into this, let’s push it higher on the algorithm and get it out there to non-followers. This allows you to grow your audience and jump from passive scrolling to endorsement. Instagram sees those shares as proof that your content has value beyond your immediate audience. If people are actively passing it along, there’s a good chance others will find it interesting too.
That’s why shares can have such a powerful impact on reach. The platform uses them as a signal that your content deserves a bigger stage, helping push it into Explore pages, recommendations, and feeds beyond your existing followers.
Mosseri has become known for occasionally tossing breadcrumbs to the masses through his own account, offering insights into how the platform works and where it’s heading next. This latest tip reinforces something many marketers have suspected for a while: passive views aren’t enough.
If people are watching but not interacting, the algorithm notices.
So instead of focusing solely on how many people saw your post, start paying attention to how many people cared enough to do something about it.
The algorithm may keep changing the rules, but one thing remains true: content that sparks conversation, creates connection, and encourages action will always have an edge.
And unlike chasing views, that’s a strategy you can actually control.
